Pandemic on a table top at CDC

There are all sorts of ways to prepare for an emergency. One is to simulate it inside a computer a computer model. But you don't have to simulate inside a computer. You can also do it in "meatspace" aka, the real world. Dungeons and Dragons using books is one example of this. Another is to do a pandemic version of D&D. It's called a table top exercise, although the size of the table can be pretty big. Recently our wiki partner, DemFromCT if you can call someone a partner who does all t

Rajivspeak is getting out of hand

One of my pet peeves is the idiotic mixing of English and Hindi words in advertising copy which is cropping up everywhere on billboards and in print. Perhaps it is considered cool. But it is cool in only the way that displaying abysmal stupidity and illiteracy is cool??which is to say it isn??t. What it advertises is that that both the writer and the readers don??t quite know either of the languages and perhaps don??t even know that they don??t know the distinction between the two. The Best Things In Life

I get reminded once in a while why I work so hard and why I keep working harder and trying to improve myself. I get reminded that the best things in life are free -- not necessarily without cost, but more because the best things in life do not come from what you do but what you get from being with people you love and love you. Lunch was a good time being with friends -- and being able to foot the bill without having to think too much about it, and how a good lunch out experience builds better r

Moral Cognitivism and the Frege-Geach Problem

In the field of metaethics, one of the key issues is whether moral claims have a cognitive or non-cognitive structure. The most natural way to understand what it means for a claim to be cognitive is probably whether the claim is propositional or is capable of taking a truth-value. For example, many epistemologists take the phenomenal experience of blueness to be non-cognitive, but the belief that I am experiencing blueness is cognitive. With respect to ethical claims, the cognitive/non-cognitiv

When CDs Ruled the Mail

When CDs Ruled the Mail Category: Advertising... Posted Monday, March 17, 2008 at 07:38 AM GMT-6 I know that Jim hates delivering NetFlix envelopes although the reason remains obscure but he could have it worse. He could have been a carrier back in the olden days when ISPs filled mailboxes to overflowing with CDs touting their services. One of the discoveries I made during the packing and unpacking process was a collection of said discs. At one time, I was sure that I could come up

Best Laid Plans

A few days ago, I got an e-mail from my friend Ted, letting me know that he and his boyfriend were having a casual and low key garden party on the 16th for St. Patrick's Day, and they wanted to know if I'd like to come. Let me catch everybody up here. Ted and I started out as friends last summer and slowly our hanging out evolved into something that resembled dating. I allowed it to go on for a tad longer than I should have, and eventually broke up with him, because, to make this as simple as

After some hints late last week about a Fed bailout, yesterday JP Morgan bought Bear Stearns for two bucks a share after being given a 30 billion credit line/insurance policy by the Federal Reserve. In a highly unusual maneuver, Fed officials said they would secure the loan by effectively taking over the huge Bear Stearns portfolio and exercising control over all major decisions in order to minimize the central bank??s own risk. ... Furtwangler, Beethoven and Hermeneutics

The comparison between the act of interpreting a text and the act of performing a musical score has often been made. I will probably use it in my own writing this summer. However the potency of the analogy struck me this morning as I was listen to a new transfer of Wilhelm Furtwangler's legendary 1951 performance of Beethoven's 9th at the re-opening of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus. Now, the other recording I have in my collection is John Eliot Gardiner's, which is a period instrument performan

Obama's "hear no evil" claim challenged by NewsMax

Barack Obama had to expect someone would challenge what he's said over and over again this past weekend, that he never heard his Pastor Jeremiah Wright's most volatile comments while sitting in the pew at Trinity United. NewsMax is challenging Obama's claims. Indeed, Obama was at Trinity July 22, 2007 when NewsMax freelance reporter Jim Davis heard what most would consider "provocative" Wright declarations from the pulpit that morning: Wright laced into America's establishment, blaming the

Core Identity: Are you who YOU want to be?

The "science" behind this states that everybody has 2 versions of themselves: 1. the identity they really walk around with = the shell 2. the person they really want to be = the core identity ? The core identity is the true identity, held captive by lack of knowledge, and circumstance. If you are working as a lawyer in a law firm, working 70hr weeks and not very satisfied, your shell dictates that you are a stressed out lawyer. But, your core identity could be that of an artist.
